Mair Research Cold Drawn Tube Production and Finishing Lines in The Automotive Tube Market

30 years ago Mair ResearchMetal-Expo regular exhibitor manufactured and commissioned its first automatic integrated finishing line for DOM cold drawn tubes. At the time the customer had a pointing machine, cold draw bench and straightener and Mair Research's task was to integrate this existing equipment with new downstream finishing consisting of multicut saws to reach final tube lengths, chamfering, visual inspection, NDT interfacing and packaging and strapping of finished tubes in bundles.
In the last 10 years Mair Research has designed and manufactured its own cold draw benches, straighteners and
pointing machines: all with very important and interesting technical features, such as:

• High productivity and reliability
• Customised line manufactured according to the customer’s needs
• User friendly equipment with quick adjustments for settings and size changeovers
• Possibility to employ tubes with some straightness deviation

Every single machine and every single line can be implemented to comply with Industry 4.0; the entire work cycle and production may be interfaced with the customer’s MES system.

In the last two years Mair Research has commissioned three complete integrated Cold Draw Bench and Finishing lines of which two in Europe and one in Mexico.

As a reference example, the following are the features of one of these lines:
Tubes to be drawn are special steel grades up to 80 mm diameter for the production of shock absorbers and
other automotive products.

The Cold Draw Bench is a 3 tube pull with 40 tons capacity. Drawn tubes will then be processed by the finishing equipment with which it is fully integrated to achieve one seamless line. The end product is a bundle ready for dispatch. All the above equipment was fully designed and manufactured by Mair Research is their plants located in Schio, Italy.

Before dispatch the equipment went through a careful in-house testing in presence of the customer.
Since all operations are performed automatically, a very limited amount of operators with sole supervisory tasks are suffi cient to conduct the line.

Consequently all operator hazards have been eliminated providing a constantly safe work environment. Mair Research is specialised in the design, manufacture and supply of fi nishing lines in general (automotive, OCTG, cold drawn DOM, other) having delivered to very important world reference producers in the field of ERW and seamless tubes.
