Ural Steel Implements Production of Ultra-High-Strength Flat Products

Specialists at Ural Steel (part of Metalloinvest,Metal-Expo regular exhibitor) have developed and produced a pilot batch of ultra-high-strength strip for the production of large-diameter oil and gas pipelines that can operate at -60°C.

Previously, Rolling Mill 2,800 had implemented strip production of up to strength class K60 with metal tensile strength of at least 590 MPa. The new product has strength class of K65, with metal tensile strength of at least 640 MPa.

Ildar Iskakov, Managing Director of Ural Steel, said: “The enterprise is implementing a quality improvement programme, as part of which we reconstructed the steelmaking facility, replaced the KVATRO finishing stand at Rolling Mill 2800, commissioned an accelerated cooling unit and a heat treatment facility for producing rolled products. The implementation of modern technologies allows us to constantly broaden our product mix and to be a step ahead of customer requirements for flat products.”

An alloying system was employed to achieve the required mechanical properties of the rolled products which includes a low carbon, sulphur and phosphorus content, manganese and molybdenum alloying, and microalloying with niobium and vanadium. This approach, in combination with use of considerable crimping in the KVARTO stand and intensive postdeformation accelerated cooling, produced the required strength and plastic properties for K65 strength class, with high cold resistance of the rolled product.

Ural Steel’s specialists have extensive experience in the development and production of cold-resistant metal. Previously, gold medals were awarded to Ural Steel at the Metal-Expo industrial exhibition for the development and application of strip for the construction of gas gathering networks at the Yamal LNG plant and for flat products made of economically alloyed cryogenic steel for the production of liquefied natural gas storage and transportation vessels in arctic conditions.
