‘Severstal-Metiz‘ builds bridges

Severstal-Metiz has over a decade of experience in the production of reinforcing strands for various applications, including prestressed structures, nuclear power plants and liquefied natural gas storage facilities, as well as cable-stayed bridges.To discuss the application of such systems, the company organised and held a coordination council in Cherepovets, entitled 'Prospects for the application of domestic strand cable-stayed systems in bridge structures'.

The event brought together over 17 companies from the road construction sector, who discussed the potential and limitations of stranded cable-stayed systems in the implementation of infrastructure projects in Russia.

'We are examining facilities constructed with domestic ropes manufactured over 40 years ago. These are known as closed-type ropes, and the technology was mastered a long time ago.In the case of bridges over large rivers, of which we have many, we need to build much larger spans, organise cable-stayed systems with longer cable strands, and switch to cables with parallel wires of open rather than closed type. Previously, such cables were imported from abroad, but now most of the components are produced in Russia. The cable-stayed strand is already available, having been tested. In collaboration with leading manufacturers such as Severstal, there is an opportunity to work on new technologies,' explained Vitaly Shmarov, Deputy Director of the Construction and Reconstruction Department of Avtodor.
