Reduced cost of steel refining with cored wire treatment

Improved stability and calcium recovery rate with reduced cost of secondary metallurgy in large-scale steelmaking: this was the challenge set by the technical specialists of NPP Technology during the development of the INSTEEL series modifiers.

At the 18th International Congress of Steelmakers and Metal Producers “From Ore to Steel” in St. Petersburg, experts from NPP Tekhnologiya delivered a presentation titled “Features of INSTEEL Modifiers Application. Industrial Trials and shared the results of full-scale industrial testing of the INSTEEL series modifiers conducted at Ural Steel, KSP Steel, and EVRAZ NTMK.

The trials of INSTEEL cored wire in various production environments revealed trends toward a reduction in non-metallic inclusions and an increase in calcium assimilation efficiency.

During the industrial trials at three different metallurgical plants, calcium recovery rates improved by 29.9%, 14.6%, and 23.5% respectively at Ural Steel, KSP Steel, and EVRAZ NTMK.

Application of the comprehensive INSTEEL modifier in diverse industrial conditions showed a reduction in contamination by large non-metallic inclusions. For instance, at Ural Steel in the production of 17G1SU steel grade, contamination by brittle silicates (maximum rating) was reduced from 4.0 to 2.5, and by non-deformable silicates from 4.0 to 3.0. At EVRAZ NTMK in the production of steel grade OS, contamination by non-deformable silicates was reduced from 2.75 to 2.47 (maximum rating).

The trials also resulted in a 12.9% reduction in the cost of refining treatment using cored wire.

NPP Tekhnologiya will present its capabilities at the international trade fair for foundry technology, materials, and castings Litmash'2025, taking place on a new site – the Timiryazev Centre, from June 3 to 5.
