Severstal completes delivery of bimetal steel using advanced technology

Severstal has promptly completed the delivery of 140 tons of corrosion-resistant bimetallic plate required for the urgent repair of equipment at a major oil refinery.

An improved manufacturing process enabled the company to shorten the production cycle and deliver bimetal with the composition 09G2S-15 + 08Kh13 in under 30 days — a significant reduction from the previous lead time of 45 days.

The use of bimetal significantly increases the reliability and service life of equipment operating under high temperatures and pressure in aggressive environments — extending operational lifespan to 30 years or more.

Severstal possesses technical expertise in producing bimetallic plate using two of the four globally recognized methods — electroslag surfacing with subsequent rolling, and pack rolling. The company’s key advantage lies in its ability to rapidly implement new bimetal compositions. This flexibility is made possible by the fact that the entire production chain is integrated within a single facility.

Currently, the main demand for bimetals comes from manufacturers of equipment for the oil and gas processing industry — including coke drums, absorbers, adsorbers, columns, and reactors. However, we see clear potential for expanding the scope of bimetal applications and are ready to develop new engineering solutions and compositions, said Andrey Leshchenko, Head of the Engineering Companies Division at Severstal.

The company is continuously expanding its bimetal product range. In 2025, thanks to the efforts of the Technical Development and Quality Directorate, Severstal successfully produced and shipped bimetallic sheets with total thicknesses of less than 16 mm and over 115 mm — both for the first time.

Among the newly developed products, special attention should be given to bimetal meeting ASME SA-263-20 standards, composed of Grade 12 Class 2 as the base layer and 410S as the cladding layer, as well as bimetal designed for large-diameter pipe manufacturing.
We invite all industry professionals to attend the Metal-Expo'2025 exhibition, which will take place in St. Petersburg from November 11 to 14, 2025. Severstal will be among the official participants, presenting its latest technological developments and product innovations. The company’s booth will be located in Hall F.
